The Cop, The Trafficker, the Militiaman: Interviews by Rio's Viva Favela

advertisement

Currently, it is the Western Zone where the public authorities annd the militias have their closest ties. At least two state deputies and three city legislators have a political monopoly in the area, and this group is in the midst of a full-bore expansion of its territory and a bid to increase the number of its representatives in the city legislature in the 2008 elections.

Vozes paralelas: Carlos Costa of Viva Favela (Rio de Janeiro) interviews (1) a Rio de Janeiro cop, (2) a Rio fireman from a militia [illegal paramilitary protection scheme] in the Western Zone, and (3) a leader of the drug traffic, about their relationships to community leaders in communities where they operate.

Fascinating interviews, all of them.

At issue is the murder, apparently by militiamen, of the community leader they installed at the Kelson's shantytown, and later expelled. The man gave interviews to O Globo and the Estado de S. Paulo newspapers detailing what he said were more than 200 summary executions since December 2006.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Did you see the one about Fernandinho Beira-mar and the guy who messed around with his girlfriend? While he was locked up, Fernadinho had the guy abducted and brutally tortured. They cut off his feet, his hands, then the leg to the knees, and his arms to the elbow, piece by piece. They burned him, but kept him alive. They left one ear in one piece, so he could listen to Fernadinho on the phone, while the guy pleaded for mercy. All this was recorded by the Federal police who had a tap on the phone. They played it on the news. Gruesome stuff.

Take care,
P9
